Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples

Piazza del Plebiscito is one of Naples' most famous and impressive squares. It lies between the Royal Palace and the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, just a short walk from Via Toledo, the San Carlo Theatre and the seafront.

It only takes a few minutes to cross the square, but it is worth slowing down to admire the buildings around it and include it in a longer walk through this monumental part of Naples.

What to see in Piazza del Plebiscito

Basilica of San Francesco di Paola

The Basilica of San Francesco di Paola dominates the curved side of the square. Its long colonnade, columns and large dome give it a very different appearance from the churches you will encounter in the narrow streets of Naples' historic centre.

Take a moment to stand beneath the colonnade and look back across the square. It is one of the best places to appreciate the scale of Piazza del Plebiscito.

The basilica was commissioned by Ferdinand of Bourbon after the dynasty returned to the throne of Naples, replacing a project planned during the rule of Joachim Murat.

Royal Palace of Naples

On the opposite side of the square stands the Royal Palace of Naples. Its long façade, including the statues set into its niches, reflects part of the history of the rulers of Naples.

The palace interiors and museum collections can also be visited. If you want to go inside, plan this separately from your walk around the square and check current opening hours, ticket prices and admission information before your visit.

The equestrian statues

In front of the colonnade stand the equestrian statues of Charles of Bourbon and Ferdinand I.

From here you can take in the two main sides of the square at once: the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola behind you and the Royal Palace opposite.

Why is it called Piazza del Plebiscito?

The square has changed both appearance and name several times during its history.

During the rule of Joachim Murat, plans were made to transform the area in front of the Royal Palace into a grand public space. When the Bourbons returned, the project changed and the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola was built at the centre of the semicircular colonnade.

The present name recalls the 1860 plebiscite connected with the annexation of the former Kingdom of the Two Sicilies during the process of Italian unification.

That history may not be immediately obvious when you enter the square today, but it is still reflected in its architecture: the royal palace on one side and the basilica commissioned after the Bourbon Restoration on the other.

How to get to Piazza del Plebiscito

Walking from Hotel Il Convento

From Hotel Il Convento, walk towards Via Toledo and continue in the direction of Piazza Trieste e Trento. Piazza del Plebiscito is immediately beside it.

It is an easy walk and can also include a short detour through Galleria Umberto I before or after visiting the square.

For guests staying at Hotel Il Convento, walking is the most natural option. Piazza del Plebiscito is close enough to include in a leisurely walk without having to plan a separate journey.

By metro

On Naples Metro Line 1, you can get off at either Toledo or Municipio and continue on foot.

Which station is best depends on where you want to start your walk: Via Toledo from Toledo station, or the Castel Nuovo and port area from Municipio.

By funicular

What to see near Piazza del Plebiscito

One of the advantages of Piazza del Plebiscito is its location. Several of Naples' major sights are within easy walking distance.

The San Carlo Theatre and Galleria Umberto I are just around the corner. From Piazza Trieste e Trento you can head back towards Via Toledo, while walking past the Royal Palace takes you towards the seafront.
