How to get to Procida from Naples

Procida is connected to Naples throughout the year by ferries and hydrofoils.

Services mainly depart from:

• Molo Beverello, used primarily by high-speed services;
• Calata Porta di Massa, used by conventional ferries.

The crossing takes approximately 40 minutes by high-speed service and around one hour by ferry. Timetables, fares and departure ports can change, so always check your ticket and the official website of your ferry company before travelling.

If you are visiting during summer, at a weekend or on a public holiday, it is a good idea to buy your return ticket before leaving Naples.

Getting to the port from Hotel Il Convento

From Hotel Il Convento, Molo Beverello can easily be reached on foot by walking along Via Toledo towards Piazza Municipio.

What to see in Procida in one day

On a first visit, there is no need to try to see every corner of the island. This itinerary covers Procida's highlights without turning your day into a race.

1. Marina Grande

Marina Grande is where ferries and hydrofoils arrive and your first introduction to Procida. Its colourful waterfront buildings, cafés and small shops immediately give you a sense of the island's atmosphere.

From here you can start walking uphill towards Terra Murata or take one of the local buses connecting the main areas of the island.

2. Terra Murata

Terra Murata is Procida's historic centre and the highest point on the island.

The walk uphill requires a little effort, but it is well worth it. From the top there are beautiful views across the Bay of Naples and over Marina di Corricella.

You will also find the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo and Palazzo d'Avalos, a historic palace later converted into a prison.

3. Marina di Corricella

From Terra Murata, walk down towards Marina di Corricella, probably the most photographed place on Procida.

Pastel-coloured houses, stairways, arches and fishing boats surround this small pedestrian harbour.

It is also one of the nicest places to stop for lunch. During summer and at weekends, booking a restaurant is advisable if you want a table overlooking the harbour.

4. Chiaiolella and Vivara

In the afternoon, take a bus towards Chiaiolella on the south-western side of Procida.

Here you will find a small marina, the beaches of Ciraccio and Chiaiolella and views towards the islet of Vivara.

Access to the Vivara Nature Reserve is not always possible and depends on scheduled openings. On a one-day visit, it is better to consider it an optional extra rather than an essential stop.

Procida and The Postman

Procida also has a strong connection with cinema. Several scenes from Il Postino (The Postman), starring Massimo Troisi, were filmed on the island.

Among the most recognisable locations are Marina di Corricella and Pozzo Vecchio beach, which is also known as the Spiaggia del Postino.

If you love the film and have enough time, you can include Pozzo Vecchio in your itinerary before continuing towards Chiaiolella.

Best beaches in Procida

From late spring to early autumn, a day trip to Procida can easily include a few hours by the sea.

• Chiaia – close to Corricella, reached by a long staircase;
• Pozzo Vecchio – a small bay made famous by Il Postino;
• Ciraccio and Chiaiolella – among the island's largest beaches and a convenient choice for the end of the day.

How to get around Procida

Procida is small, but it is not completely flat. The easiest way to explore the island is therefore to combine walking with local buses.
